Webster's Technique
A safe and effective way of turning breach pregnancies.
Discovered by Dr. Larry Webster over 30 years ago, the Webster's Technique is a specific, safe and gentle chiropractic adjustment for expectant mothers with their baby in the breach presentation.
The Webster's technique addresses intrauterine constraint, defined as any force external to the baby that obstructs normal movement. Not to be confused with obstetric manual turning techniques, which involve contact to the baby, Webster’s is an extremely gentle technique that helps restore proper pelvic balance and function to the expectant mother. This reduces stress, which then allows the baby to move into proper position. Because this is done without contact to the baby, there are little or no contraindications.
As a doctor of chiropractic, I choose to use the Webster’s technique for several reasons:
First and foremost, it is safe. There is no contact to the baby. You are not forcing the baby to do something the baby is not meant to do.
The second reason is its success rate. Webster’s has a proven track record.
The third reason is respect. It respects the birth process and the fact that there is an internal intelligence. The body knows exactly what to do. The same intelligence that is able to grow two cells into three trillion in nine months and governs normal body function is also able to heal itself.
Stress is ultimately the reason for imbalances in body function. Chiropractic helps the body alleviate stress by optimizing nervous system function and the biomechanics of the spine and pelvis. Webster’s is one of many techniques that aids in alleviating stress and restoring balance. Often doctors, doulas, midwives, and OB/GYNs often refer clients to be adjusted during all phases of pregnancy, breach or otherwise, because of this benefit.
